My Grandfather's Death and Simon Le Bon's Brush Cut
STORY BY: Sharon W.
YEAR: 1985
LOCATION: Calgary, AB
Sharon tells a story from 1985 and the Live-Aid benefit concerts to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia. She's 14, and at the height of her obsession with Duran Duran and Simon Le Bon (their lead singer). It's announced that Simon is going to come out with a new brush cut - a "very big deal", in her words, given Simon's long, blond locks. In her basement, waiting for Simon to come on, she gets a call from her great aunt that her grandfather has died. She hangs up, stunned, but hurries back to the TV to ensure she doesn’t miss Duran Duran’s performance. For Sharon, her grandfather's death is inextricably linked to Simon Le Bon's haircut and Live Aid, and she will "never forget 1985". Thanks for sharing, Sharon! (apologies for the out-of-focus video!)
