Protesting in the Velvet Revolution

STORY BY: Jenera Q.
YEAR: 1987
LOCATION: Prague

Jenera (sp?) was born in 1968 in Kiev, Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union. In 1987, she left for Czechoslovakia and took part in the "Velvet Revolution" in 1989, which eventually led to the end 41 years of one-party communist rule. She remembers marching in the streets, holding candles, while police officers hosing them protesters, trying to get them to disperse. In her words, it was "quite amazing and quite exciting". In 1992, she emigrated to Montreal, because she says Quebec was the only province that accepted immigrants at the time. Thanks for sharing!
