“This Just In: The Cold Lake War”

STORY BY: Maureen McLeod
YEAR: 1960
LOCATION: Cold Lake, Alberta.

Maureen was born in Cold Lake, Alberta, and lived there until 1960. Her father was the first mayor of the town and a school principal. He also sometimes wrote for the newspaper, usually articles about the Cold War. Once, she remembers that the newspaper editor made a mistake in the headline, and wrote “The Cold Lake War”. A side note from Maureen: Cold Lake was on Pinetree Line, a series of radar stations located across the northern United States and southern Canada. It was built specifically for the Cold War to defend North America against the USSR. Thanks for sharing, Maureen.
