A WW2 Soldier Gets an A+ in Public Speaking Class

STORY BY: Claudia D.
YEAR: 1942
LOCATION: Calgary, AB

As a veteran of World War 2, Claudia’s father told her many stories. He was not an educated man, having left school after Grade 8. He trained as a marksman in the military, and was told that he might be sent to fight on the front lines. He saw a chance for advancement elsewhere in the forces, and took many classes with students who were Harvard-educated, and far more literate than he was. He did have a good memory, so for a public-speaking presentation, he learned an article from Reader’s Digest by heart. He thought he was going to get an F, but he was the only student to get an A+. Thanks for sharing, Claudia.
