A Winnipeg Grenadier at a Japanese POW Camp

STORY BY: Phyllis Downie
YEAR: 1940
LOCATION: Hong Kong

Phyllis's father was a member of the Winnipeg Grenadiers, and was held at a Japanese Prison Camp during the Second World War. They were subjected to all kinds of cruel treatment that "one would never think would happen." She thought it never would, until hearing about some of the brutal tactics used by terrorists today. She's sorry that we're now living through what she calls "small individual wars that people are pulling on each other". The Winnipeg Grenadiers did everything they could to fight the Japanese, but without proper equipment or supplies. She hopes some day to be able to visit the POW camp in Hong Kong. Thanks for sharing, Phyllis.
