Canada: “Everything America was Promising and not Delivering On”
STORY BY: Michael Dorgan
YEAR: 1960
LOCATION: Buffalo, NY
Michael was born in Buffalo, NY, and came to Canada in 1972. He vowed never to go to Vietnam and was bombarded with American propaganda such as, "There's only 2 kinds of people in the world: Americans and them that wanna be." As a teenager at the CNE, Michael was agog at the disparity between the cleanliness and bustle of Toronto and the scary nature of Buffalo. He also reflected on the myth of America as the great melting pot. In Buffalo, everyone spoke English, but at Yonge and Bloor, it was fantastic to hear multiple languages. Thanks for sharing, Michael.
