How Winnipeg Welcomed Draft Dodgers

STORY BY: Bonnie Siemens
YEAR: 1969
LOCATION: Winnipeg, MB

In the 1960s, Bonnie met some draft dodgers from the USA who had come up to Winnipeg. Canadians were far more receptive to their cause than most Americans, including some of their closest family members and neighbours. One man started a family and raised his two daughters here before getting a pardon from the US government. Bonnie finds it interesting that after spending so much time in Canada, he still wanted to go home. She wonders what happened to these families, and if modern technology will enable her to get back in touch with them. Thanks for sharing, Bonnie.
