School Drills and Cold War Fears
STORY BY: Carolyn Schellenberg
YEAR: 1962
LOCATION: Gladstone, MB
At the height of the Cold War, Carolyn attended a 1-room school near Gladstone, MB. The Bay of Pigs invasion heightened the fear of a nuclear war, and drills were being held in schools across the country. Carolyn had to practice jumping out the window and seeing how quickly students could make it home. It was quite terrifying for everyone, but luckily the nuclear war never happened. Thanks for sharing, Carolyn.
