Called a Nazi for Speaking with a Swedish Accent

STORY BY: Donna Jonsson
YEAR: 1948
LOCATION: Winnipeg, MB

Donna is a pre-boomer who was raised by Swedish parents, and grew up speaking English with a Swedish accent. She was called a Nazi, although she didn't know what it meant. She later joined the Canadian Air Force, giving her a unique perspective on the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis and JFK's assassination. From that point on, she remembers that the safe, polite 1960s "exploded into everything", and realizes what an impact war has had on her entire life. Thanks for sharing, Donna.
