German U-Boats in the St. Lawrence Seaway

STORY BY: Karen Klayh
YEAR: 1944
LOCATION: St. Lawrence Seaway, QC and NYC, NY

Karen's father and uncle were both members of the Canadian Navy. Her father was patrolling the St. Lawrence Seaway during World War 2, when his ship was struck by a German U-Boat. Her uncle sometimes went to nightclubs in New York City, and German U-boats would patrol the shores, in plain sight of the soldiers. Karen's son was surprised to find out how far German forces made their way into Canada and the USA. She doesn't think young people understand how vulnerable we were, and how important it was that people like her father and uncle helped defend Canada. Thanks for sharing, Karen.
