Terrified of My Grandparents' Bomb Shelter

STORY BY: Howard Rosenstein
YEAR: 1967
LOCATION: Westmount, Montreal, QC

Howard's grandparents built their own house from scratch in Surrey Gardens, Westmount, an affluent neighbourhood in Montreal. They had all the latest technology, like a microwave oven, and a bomb shelter. Howard used to go in there as a kid in the 60s, touching the cans of food stored in case of a nuclear war. He had a recurring nightmare that all of his neighbourhood was destroyed, like the pictures he saw of Hiroshima, Japan, and he grew up terrified of nuclear bombs. Thanks for sharing, Howard.
