A Canadian Almost Drafted into Vietnam

STORY BY: Robin Smith
YEAR: 1965

In 1965, Robin got a job with a company in the USA, without realizing that he could be drafted to fight in Vietnam. The company's senior Vice President was also a general in the Reserves. He recounts a conversation they had: "Son, if you were an American boy, I'd tell you that you've got to go to Vietnam and serve your country and fight those commies. But because you're a Canadian and we brought you down, you should maybe think about your future. But one good thing if you fight - when you come back from Vietnam you'll be an American citizen." Robin replied: "Well I'm a citizen already, sir... a Canadian citizen. And that's what I'm going to stay." The senior VP finished with: "Well, maybe you should go back to Canada." Thanks for sharing, Robin
