A Closeted Cuban Crisis
STORY BY: Debbie Williams
YEAR: 1962
LOCATION: Halifax, NS
Debbie and Earlene talk about being very scared young girls during the Cuban Missile Crisis. One day, a neighbour told them that at noon the next day, they would be sent home from school, and the Russians would begin to bomb Halifax. Earlene knew it was a lie, but Debbie believed her. Convinced she was going to die, Debbie refused to go bed, and locked herself in a closet. Her mother called Earlene, who came over with her father and talked her down. Debbie then makes a parallel with 9/11, wondering if any of her 6-year old students locked themselves in closets at that time too. Thanks for sharing, Debbie and Earlene.
