Living Out History
STORY BY: George Iwaniuk
YEAR: 2015
LOCATION: Duisburg, Germany
George is of Polish descent, and was born in Germany and raised in a displaced person's camp before coming to Canada. He tells us about how most Europeans are acutely aware of history. Three weeks ago, he was in Duisburg, Germany, touring the sights with a guide, and visiting a park near a bombed out building. Duisburg had been ravaged by Allied bombing during World War 2. The guide thanked George for bombing them, for ending the abomination of the Nazi regime. The park and buildings stand as memorials in Europe, whereas in Canada we have a few statues and plaques. "We don't live history... and perhaps this is one of our shortcomings". Thanks for sharing, George.
