From Sputnik to GPS

STORY BY: Scott Packford
YEAR: 1963
LOCATION: Howard County, Maryland

Scott tells us about the 1957 Soviet satellite Sputnik, and how it inspired the invention of the GPS - by his uncle, a Canadian! Frank McClure was Head of Research at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland. He said that "if you know where you are in space, you'll know where you are on land." Frank's research contributed to the invention of the GPS in 1963, and you can find out more here. Thanks for sharing, Scott.
