The Leafs and the Beatles
STORY BY: April Banigan
YEAR: 1967
LOCATION: Toronto
April tells us a family story that connect the Toronto Maple Leafs to The Beatles. Her Uncle Stafford Smythe (son of Conn Smythe) was the owner of the Leafs when they won the Stanley Cup in 1967, and April's dad actually drank from the Cup itself! Uncle Stafford also brought the Beatles to Maple Leaf Gardens in 1964, and her Dad invited the prettiest girl in school to the concert. Yes, he used family connections to gain favour... and to an extent, it worked! Thanks for sharing, April.
